My

STORY

For a science fair, I created a solar powered backpack to solve a problem everyone has...

A flat mobile phone battery!

Since so many people liked the prototype, I decided to start a Solar Powered Backpack Company

In 2016, Jackson designed a solar powered backpack, which enables you to charge a phone or iPad directly from a backpack via a USB, and entered it in the Victorian Science Talent Search competition.

His goal was to solve a ‘real problem’ – which was, he always ran out of battery for his iPhone when he was out and about with his friends or at sports training.   Not only was Jackson a finalist in the science competition and won a bursary award, but the judges and other contestants said they’d like to buy one.

Based on the feedback Jackson received from teachers and friends on his prototype, he realised his solar power backpacks solved real phone charging problems for anyone who enjoys spending a lot of time outside such as hikers, skiers, cyclists, festival goers and walkers.

Based on this positive feedback, Jackson had the idea to start his company.

According to Jackson, “I knew from the prototype that this would be a huge success as there are so many use cases for my solar powered backpacks.  Also, I figured it was more fun to start a business and sell backpacks online than to do chores around the house for extra pocket money.”

Jax Solar Pax comes in two styles – the orange Sports Solar Pax has a removable solar panel and water bladder, and the black Day Solar Pax is perfect for anyone who needs to pack a lot of things.

Jackson also worked with the innovations department at Energy Australia who helped him think about product design.  In addition, he worked with a graphic designer, Suzie from Tout Creative who helped him with his logo.
